1. Why Solid Wood Kitchen Countertops Are Making a Comeback
For decades, granite and quartz dominated the kitchen countertop conversation. But solid wood countertops are surging in popularity - and for good reason. They're warm to the touch, absorb impact without cracking, develop a rich patina over time, and can be sanded and refinished when scratched. Try doing that with a cracked quartz slab.
a. Live Edge Slabs - Not Butcher Block

Ashdeco kitchen countertops aren't strips of wood glued together into a butcher block grid. Each countertop is cut from a single solid wood slab - one continuous piece of hardwood with the natural outer edge of the tree preserved. The organic curves, bark traces, and character marks make every slab genuinely one-of-a-kind.
b. Handcrafted by Vietnamese Artisans
Our artisans hand-select each slab, sand it smooth, and finish it with food-safe, moisture-resistant sealant. The live edge is carefully preserved - cleaned of loose bark, stabilized, and sealed while keeping the natural contour intact.
c. 1.5"-2.5" Thick - Built Like a Workbench
Standard factory countertops run 0.75"- 1.25" thick. Ashdeco slabs are 1.5"-2.5" - significantly thicker = premium feel, greater strength, ability to sand and refinish multiple times over 20+ years.
2. Wood Types for Kitchen Countertops
• Walnut: Rich dark tones, dramatic grain. Deepest patina over time. Best for: statement kitchen islands, bar tops.
• Teak: Gold standard for moisture. Natural oils repel water, resist mold, prevent rot (same as boat decks). Best for: near-sink counters, high-humidity kitchens.
• Acacia: Dramatic two-tone grain, golden-brown. Naturally water-resistant, harder than oak on Janka scale. Best for: high-traffic family kitchens.
• Oak: Classic grain, honey to medium brown. Hardest common hardwood. Best for: traditional, farmhouse style.
All finished with food-safe, moisture-resistant sealant. No MDF, no laminate, no printed veneer.
3. Sizing Guide
• Width: 24"-36". Standard kitchen depth 25", wider slabs (30"-36") for islands with seating overhang.

• Length: 48"-96". Shorter for islands, longer for full counter runs.
• Thickness: 1.5"-2.5". Thicker = more substantial feel + more material for future refinishing.
• Custom sizing: Email support@ashdeco.com with your measurements.
4. Where to Use Solid Wood Countertops
• Kitchen island top: Most popular use. Live edge slab on cabinet base or steel frame. Add bar stools on overhang side.
• Bar top: Walnut or teak slab on half-wall or bar frame. Pair with bar floating shelves behind for glassware + bottles.
• Perimeter countertop: Replace a section of stone with wood - typically prep area or breakfast nook. Mixing materials (stone near stove, wood on island) = top kitchen design trend.
• Bathroom vanity top: Live edge slab on bathroom vanity base. Teak especially suited for wet environments.
• Desk surface: Same slabs as stunning desk tops. Live edge on steel frame = classic modern industrial workspace.
5. Solid Wood vs. Other Countertop Materials
• Solid wood (Ashdeco): Warm to touch, absorbs impact, repairable/refinishable, develops patina, unique beauty. Needs periodic oiling. 20+ years.
• Granite: Extremely hard, heat-resistant. Cold, can crack from impact, chips not repairable at home.

• Quartz (engineered): Non-porous, uniform. Cannot handle high heat (scorches), not repairable, no natural variation.
• Butcher block (laminated strips): More affordable wood, but glue seams separate with moisture. Less visual character than single slab. Thinner (1"-1.5").
• Laminate: Budget. Burns near stove, chips at edges, not repairable, no resale value. 5-10 years. Unique advantage of live edge slabs: only countertop material that genuinely gets better with age AND can be fully restored to new condition.
6. Installation & Care
a. Installation
• Position slab on existing base (cabinet, steel legs, half-wall). Level and secure with L-brackets from underneath.
• Sink cutouts: mark template, have professional make the cut. Licensed contractor for plumbing.
• Slabs are heavy (50-120 lbs) - two people for positioning.
b. Daily Care
• Wipe spills immediately-especially wine, citrus, vinegar.
• Use cutting boards (protects finish from knife marks).
• Use trivets for hot pots and pans.
c. Periodic Maintenance
• Every 3-6 months: Food-safe mineral oil or wood wax. 15-20 minutes.
• Every 2-3 years: Light sanding (220 grit) + fresh food-safe finish = like-new surface.
• Complement with floating shelves for kitchen above - matching wood tone for cohesive kitchen design.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Ashdeco kitchen countertops?
Live edge solid wood slabs handcrafted to serve as kitchen island tops, bar tops, or countertop surfaces. Each slab is cut from a single piece of natural hardwood, preserving the organic outer contour of the tree. Designed to sit on top of existing cabinets, island bases, or custom frameworks.
What is a live edge kitchen countertop?
Preserves the natural outer edge of the tree trunk - organic curves, bark traces, character marks that factory-cut slabs remove. One or both sides follow the actual shape of the tree. No two slabs are identical.
What wood types?
Walnut (rich dark tones), teak (moisture and heat resistant - gold standard for kitchens), acacia (dramatic two-tone grain), oak (classic strength). All finished with food-safe, moisture-resistant sealant. Never butcher block laminate, MDF, or printed veneer.
How thick?
1.5"-2.5" - significantly thicker than standard factory countertops (0.75"-1.25"). Extra thickness = premium feel, greater strength, and ability to sand/refinish in the future.
What sizes?
Widths: 24"-36". Lengths: 48"-96". Each piece has unique dimensions following the natural slab shape. Custom sizing available - email support@ashdeco.com with your measurements.
Is solid wood suitable for kitchen countertops?
Yes. Warm to the touch (unlike cold stone), absorbs impact without cracking (unlike granite/marble), develops rich patina, and can be sanded/refinished. Lasts 20+ years with proper sealing. The most repairable countertop material available.
How to install?
Position slab on existing base, level, secure from underneath with L-brackets or screws through cabinet frame. For sink cutouts: mark template and have a pro make the cut. Licensed contractor recommended for plumbing.
Can I cut directly on it?
Use cutting boards - knives will scratch the finish over time. Advantage: if scratches happen, real wood can be lightly sanded and re-sealed - impossible with quartz, laminate, or stone.
Is the finish food-safe?
Yes. Finished with food-grade mineral oil, tung oil, or food-safe polyurethane. Safe for food contact. Reapply mineral oil or butcher block oil every 3-6 months.
How to care?
Wipe daily with damp cloth + mild dish soap, dry immediately. Trivets under hot pots. Cutting boards for prep. Clean acidic spills (lemon, vinegar, wine) promptly. Food-safe oil every 3-6 months. Light sand + re-seal every 1-2 years for fresh look.
Wood vs granite, quartz, marble?
Wood: warmer, absorbs impact, repairable, develops patina. Stone/quartz: harder, more heat-resistant but cracks under impact, can't be repaired. Marble: stains easily. Many kitchens combine both - wood island top + stone perimeter counters.
Ashdeco vs mass-produced?
Mass-produced = laminated butcher block (thin strips glued together) or MDF with printed surface. Ashdeco = single-piece live edge slabs, 1.5"-2.5" thick, handcrafted by Vietnamese artisans. Each preserves the unique grain and natural edge of the original tree. Pair with kitchen cabinets and wall floating shelves.
